Abstract
--------

This article examines the relationship between Ronald Coase’s concept of
transaction costs and Karl Marx’s labor theory of value (LTV). While these
frameworks are often seen as theoretically incompatible, this paper argues that
they operate at distinct but complementary levels of analysis. Coase provides a
theory of the institutional forms of economic coordination under conditions of
positive transaction costs, while Marx offers a theory of value, exploitation,
and class relations rooted in production. By situating transaction costs within
Marx’s analysis of circulation, the paper develops a Marx–Coase synthesis that
clarifies the role of firms as “islands of planning” within capitalism and
reconsiders the implications for the socialist calculation debate. It further
argues that contemporary developments in digital coordination technologies,
along with a reassessment of earlier Soviet approaches to planning, strengthen
the relevance of this synthesis for understanding both capitalist institutions
and the prospects for socialist economic organization.
