Sidney Hook was a man of great intellectual gifts, combined with worsening politics, after the 1930s, and low moral character. The younger Sidney Hook, who among other things managed to secure a tenured chair at a prestigious university at a time when Jews were still effectively barred from such positions was remarkable.And the fact that he was an avowed Marxist at that time,made his accomplishment even more remarkable.Of course if the older Sidney Hook had had his way, the young Sidney Hook would have been tossed out of academia on his ear.
