[UMN_MAPSERVER-USERS] Simplifying Shapefiles

I recall seeing a method or utility before to take something like  
Tiger Census data and convert it to a more simplified shape file. I'm  
looking for performance here because right now my mapserver is too  
slow for my tastes. Basically I just it to create one linestring for  
each street wherever possible.

Does anyone know where I can find out how to do this or a program to  
do this?
