Go ahead and try it!
I have been using it for more than a year, among other purposes for GIS
in MapInfo.
A great tool. Imagine scanning to max resolution, some 30-40 Mb, then
ECW compress it to 2-3 Mb, register the stuff in MapInfo and voila!
Zooming in becomes FUN!
Before, I had a crush for MrSid and Lizardtech - but they won't let you
try it unless you pay.
Forget MrSid - ECW is here to stay.
