Should be able to send an email to the <group
name>[email protected]
I was just trying to add someone to a googlegroup we have for a Scout
Troop and it told me I couldn't directly add them and had to send an
invitation. This is the first time that has happened.
I had them send an email to <group name>[email protected] but
it hadn't shown up in the hour we were waiting and I couldn't get to the
management interface on my phone to try while we were at the meeting.

Which is why we give Google Groups a negative reputation.. (Aside from
the long standing obvious abuse of it)
You should NEVER have to log in to 'unsubscribe', let alone have to get
a google account to remove yourself..
Spam folders are full of those.. actually, majority of what is in my
personal spam folders is from some form of Google spam..

Typical three part .com domains..
Pretty soon, simply going to reject those with 4xx ;) too..
I get why ..
X-Spam-Checked-In-Group: [email protected]
.. might not consider this as 'Spam' but it is still unsolicited bulk
email (UBE) that Google is empowering..
Wish they would include the source IP address of the list sender in the
trace headers, so we can help show that this is the same actors
responsible, so the few honest users of Google Groups (percentage wise)
are not affected..

FWIW I've seen this behavior for years. The last time I checked, each
user has to go into google groups global settings and opt out of being
added to or invited to groups :

Why the hell does Google make possible to add someone to a Google group

Indeed
And the emails contain a list-unsubscribe URL - but it doesn't work.
That also seems ridiculous.
The problem is that the malefactors just create new groups all the
time, so it's either a case of blocking the automated responses - but
they may be legitimate, chasing the groups they create, or blocking
all Google Groups.
If, as people are suggesting, this is a common thing with Google
Groups, I may just block all those, with a whitelist that can be
added to for known groups.
