I already said that - it's better not to think of it as "fallback", but just
as a *simple* form of email address "user@host", while "user@domain", where
"domain" is a MX record, can be considered a more "advanced" form (it
definitely requires more effort for the admin, so the term "advanced" makes
sense here).


At the time, we used to dub www the host that handles http requests. For years domain names had no address records at all. Curiously, there never was a WWW resource record in the DNS (but there are generic _http.tcp SRV records that nobody uses). Companies that operate multiple web servers have to use mechanisms different from MX's priorities...
