FWIW, my workaround for incoming sounds being flaky (in past iterations of MM) and to cover my needs with delay of the sound until my SpamSieve Drone filtering finishes (so as not to hear any incoming sound from spam Mail), is via a specific filter which plays on incoming mail at any inbox, a sounds after a 2m delay. In a similar way could customize the sounds (choice of System Sounds) per mailbox if I wish.
So I do not usually use a setting in MM preferences. Respectfully, Henry Seiden - - Techworks Pro Co.
