if i send no subject in plane text, i get nothing back in my inbox, but if i
switch it to html, then i get a responce, saying i was subscribed.

What is the Subject: and the body contents of the messages you are
sending?
What is the response you get to your HTML message?
Is there an entry like "No command, message discarded, msgid: ..." in
Mailman's 'vette' log corresponding to your plain text message?
