It depends what kind of infrastructure you already have. You need to have or have access to a server which meets the following requirements: Is connected to the internet with a fixed IP address. Has a domain name. Has rDNS to to that domain name. Is available on the internet at least most of the time. Without the above, you won't be able to reliably send and receive mail. If you have that, and have 'root access' to that server, and that server has (or you can install) an MTA and a web server, then you can install Mailman and have it work. Is it worth it for one list? No, unless there is a significant 'hobby project' component.
