Does it say something about "lock while already locked" or not? Also, if you could rebuild (which platform do you use? if Windows, you can also get a debug binary) the program in debug mode, it might give more info so this would be helpful. Another thing to do try is to enter the commands from the log below manually, i.e. "telnet imap.server 143" and do 1 LOGIN username password 2 EXAMINE inbox 3 THREAD REFERENCES US-ASCII ALL What does the server reply?
