Thanks! I found it easier to use gdk_window_foreign_new and then
gdk_window_fullscreen. I've now got a semi-working hack using my
powerlaunch program to force any window into fullscreen by
pressing power,fullscreen.
For example, I can now run NX in fullscreen and get a full KDE
desktop on the N800:

The one remaining issue I have is how to reliably get the ID of
the top window or focused window. I'm using XQueryPointer to get
the window under the pointer but it appears to sometimes give
windows that no longer exist (cache?) and thereby giving BadWindow
errors.
