You don't mention how many messages, but I'm guessing a lot.

To be safe I would delete in sections. If you set up a schedule to delete
older than xxx days, then change date in increments until you get them
deleted.

Manually, you can select the messages in bunches and use  delete.

It's best not to let this folder pile up. Use a schedule to delete on a
regular basis whether it be daily, weekly or monthly.
