Cliff - 

I had this same problem - some time back and I had to go to my ISP - who
walked me thru finding where these emails are being stored on my computer.
In my case, they were not on their server anymore - and were on my machine
and they walked me thru finding where they were stored and then I was able
to delete them just fine.
