Yes, for most use cases. Without a real-time kernel, the servo thread which typically runs every millisecond (1 KHz rate) can be blocked for very long time periods (hundreds of milliseconds). The only times you don't need a real-time kernel are when you are running a simulation or when your system does not have hard real time constraints.
