I just posted this message to Mac-talk; I'm also posting this to the
LakeMUG list and the Mac-N-DOS list for the benefit of whatever
MUGWumps like me are reading, as well as any PC-using friends you may
have.

Something which I think is a somewhat different subject but is a
security issue affecting us MUGWumps needs to get out.

If you are using a PC part-time (including Virtual PC), there have
been VERY serious compromises (yes, more than usual) in MS Windows,
particularly Internet Explorer (I understand that this does not affect
IE for the Mac). It involves new ways of compromising a PC where you
don't know it's happening, and does involve "phishing" (stealing your
personal info for identity theft purposes).

US-CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team) is advising, among other
things, that PC users consider switching browsers. MSIE is simply too
insecure--and what you have to do to MAKE it secure makes it almost
worthless. Most are switching to one of the Mozilla browsers (the one
that Netscape is built on, and also has some kind of connection to
Safari), available at [http://www.mozilla.org]. They're free, open
source browsers. Mozilla Firefox is particularly nimble (though a
little slower to open). And if you've used Safari, you'll find the
interface to be quite familiar (we discussed this a bit at our last
MUG meeting).

I used to be a fairly faithful MSIE user. Now my default PC browser is
Mozilla.

Consider yourselves fairly warned.

I'm a MUGWump: My "MUG" is on the Mac side of the fence (since mid-2002), and
my "Wump" is on the PC side (since 1989). I've been on the trailing edge of
computer technology since 1987 and love it! [P.S.] Due to limitations on this
account, please send binaries to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and a confirmation note here.
