Definitely flawed understanding - sorry.

OS X uses Printer Setup and associated drivers and Classic (OS 9) uses the OS 9 printer extensions and the Chooser.

Yup, I acknowledge my error.

A workaround that DOES work would be to create a document in something like SimpleText, which is a Classic application, but then reopen it in an OS X application like TextEdit and print from there, although that's a pretty simplistic example.

An option which MIGHT work would be to install Adobe Acrobat on the OS 9 side of things so that you could always create a PDF file using the Print command in OS 9, then flip over to OS X, open the PDF file there, and print it. Again not very pleasing but entirely workable. I do 99% of my printing to a black and white laser printer and only occasionally have to print in colour to my inkjet printer. If I had to use Acrobat to get to that colour printer, it would work for me. But I can see that for man others it would not be a practical solution.

Anyway, it sounds from all the other postings that there are a number of printer options available that would allow one to avoid all this stuff, although perhaps not with the specific printer which is owned by the originator of this thread.
