You might try 'blessing the system' -- I've had the best luck opening the
system folder and dragging the System file out to the desktop and then
closing the system folder, re-opening the folder and then replacing the
System file. You 'should' be able to do this while in X. To verify the
blessing took effect, go to the Startup Disk preference to see if OS 9 is
an option.
