I'd like to think that the idea behind furnishing links is that people can
take a look at a given page and make up their own minds. Websites are a
tool to "back up" an opinion. Of course, critical thinking is a valuable
skill on the 'Net and it's up to the reader to decide whether a particular
page is of dubious value or not.

The problem with doing this is that people who furnish statements of
"personal experience" tend to feel strongly about the subject one way or the
other.

That being said, that's why mailing lists are nice: I'd like to think that
if you get opinions from, say, 10 people that that will give you a fair idea
of what's going on (with the aforementioned caveat).

Sadly, I can understand what would cause someone to say that. Americans
were told "If we're an arrogant nation, they'll resent us; if we're a humble
nation, but strong, they'll welcome us." Perhaps if America worked harder
on being the latter rather than the former then I would not need to work so
hard on imitating a Canadian accent when going abroad.
