The 9600 is a tall board too. They are the same size. (9500 & 9600)
The key ting is though that despite being a larger board, the holes for the stand offs and all the ports are in the same place. the 9x00 boards are just longer to make space for the 3 extra pci slots.
Im pretty sure the only physical difference between the 8500/9500 and the 8600/9600 is the case.
Everything else is swapable I believe. except for the power supplies are bigger on the 8600/9600 AND you cant use the mach 5 processor cards on a non mach 5 board. But that is a non issue for you.
Does your 8600 case not have 6 pci slot holes on the back?
I am not 100 percent sure on this but im sure if you posted an OT on the swap list that someone could get back to you.

If you are looking to "hack" why not see if the 9500 board will fit into the 8600 case? Best of both worlds!
Yeah, that would be the best,
The 9500 is the old style case has a big tall board, it would be nice, maybe I could find a 9600 board on ebay in the future, I think the 9600 and 8600 were the same, just one more expandable than the other.
