So are there options to PowerPoint?

I've used GraphicConverter in both classic and X versions. Very powerful program, US$35 shareware, has a slide show feature. There are also some free plugins available that allow you to stitch together panoramas, correct perspective (great for architectural photography), etc.

I'm now using the free iPhoto that comes with OS X. A tad slow, but it does slide shows, and you can have background music if you like!

My powerbook plugs into TVs, if I want a bigger display when an LCD projector isn't available.

My Sony Cybershot digital camera has a slide show feature also, and it will plug into a TV. With a large memory stick, I can download a lot of photos into the camera from my computer if I want to show photos to people without dragging my laptop around.
