Ok, well what should happen is when you connect it to your USB port (or
whenever you connect anything to the USB port) the computer should detect
it.  It takes a couple of seconds sometimes before it does.  Try connecting
it to the other USB port.  If you followed the instructions to the letter
then you should see the device listed in the Sound Control panel under both
input and output.  If you do then you need to select the device.  Make sure
the recording volume in the Sound Control panel is set correctly.

If your CD's are playing then you know that the speakers are fine.  Try
connecting other USB devices to make sure your USB ports are working.  If
those devices work, then it could be the iMic you bought was a lemon.
Exchange it for another.

Toast wouldn't have had anything to do with messing up sound recording- it's
strictly for CD/DVD burning.
