It doesn't appear to be configurable. If it's an image, you can drag it to the desktop, and then open it in another application. The image gets the filename which was specified in the attachment. You can also try the View/Show/etc menu sequence, which might split the attachment off, though when I tried it just now on a message with an attachment it showed the attachment as a string of hex characters - not helpful at all!

I use the Mail program in OS 10.2.6. Occasionally I receive a letter that includes an attachment. The attachment opens up automatically at the bottom of the message. Can I open up this attachment as a separate item from the letter? There doesn't seem to be any link that will allow me to click on the attachment. I've looked through the preferences and menu items.
