AFAIK the 200-233MHz 8600-9600 processor modules can be used in the 7x00 series computers, but the higher speed Kansas models (300-350MHz, which have an inline 1MB L2 cache) cannot. What confuses me is that Apple never produced a 400MHz processor card for the 9600. The 604e based machines officially stopped at 350MHz (though there are some people who over clocked those to 400MHz - see www.xlr8yourmac.com for details).
So to sum up, if it is a 604e and is faster than 233mhz, the module probably will NOT work in your 7600. If it is a G3 or G4 upgrade card, then it should work (assuming you also have the drivers). There was also a 200MHz multiprocessor model. I'm not sure if that card would work in the other series or not (I'm guessing it would but I'm not sure). -----Original Message----- From: Mac Duff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: July 28, 2003 4:44 PM To: Mac Canada Subject: Re: stupid me 9600 upgrade? Holy Jeez, yer askin' for it. Asking for what, exactly, I don't know, as I've never used a processor from one Mac in another. Like, I've put in processor upgrades that were INTENDED for the system they were going into, but this is different. It sounds risky to me. Anyway, your 7600 ( http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/7600.shtml ) DOES have the same front side bus speed. But, the 9600 ( http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/9600.shtml ) did use a very different processor... And maybe an incompatible motherboard. But, Sonnet's G3 and G4 processor upgrades do work across both models, so maybe there are more similarities than I think and it's okay... Or maybe Sonnet's self configuring System Folder extension handles this? In which case, there would be no software handling this for you and your situation. Here's Sonnet's page: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/crescendo_pci.html Here's Mac Warehouse Canada's page (where I first noticed that this upgrade runs on both your and the seller's machines): http://www.macwarehouse.ca/product.asp?sku=DRI4054 Good luck. Maybe someone else can help on this? On 7/28/03 3:13 PM, "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > Hi all. I have a power mac 7600 with 320 mgs ram.
