At the bottom of this benchmark[1] you can find another reason why the unxz applet seems to decompress a little faster than the lunzip applet; unxz does not verify the integrity of standard xz files (like those distributed by GNU or kernel.org). Note that it is unsafe to decompress standard xz files with busybox; even unsafer than decompressing lzma-alone files.
