I guess the "lzip projects" you are referring to are lziprecover and
lzd. The first is only useful to users of lzip. The second, only to
students of computer science.
I'll provide a gzip tarball for the next version of lziprecover to be
released this month. I do not think that making a binary package of lzd
is needed; no user would want to use it[1]:
"Lzd is a simplified decompressor for lzip files with an educational
purpose. Studying its source is a good first step to understand how lzip
works. It is not safe to use lzd for any real work."

Thanks. "lzip projects" is a bad wording because I had not planned to
provide a port for lzd. I checked the files and saw two missing .tar.gz
without to check also the name.
I know that I could compress the tarball myself or to decompress the
tarball with a pipe but both solutions are suboptimal.
I hope lzip support will be soon added to the ports framework, because
some GNU packages are already being distributed as lzip tarballs[2]:
"Various compression formats are used on the server: .gz is gzip
(http://gnu.org/software/gzip); .bz2 is bzip2 (http://bzip.org); .xz is
xz (http://tukaani.org/xz); .lz is lzip
