Thanks for your offer to help.

What I did was to place a figure float within a figure float to create 
subfloats.
Even with no text in the caption or graphics inserted, I get errors that look 
like this:

You can't use '\spacefactor' in vertical mode.
Missing $ inserted.
LaTeX Error: Missing \begin(document).
Missing $ inserted.
LaTeX Error: Missing \begin(document).
Use of \sf doesn't match its definition.
Use of \sf doesn't match its definition.
Improper alphabetic constant.
Use of \sf doesn't match its definition.
Missing number, treated as zero.
Undefined control sequence.
Undefined control sequence.
Undefined control sequence.
...
Undefined control sequence.
You can't use 'macro parameter character #' in horizontal mode.

Missing \endcsname inserted.
Missing control sequence inserted.

I tried a table float within a table float, and saw similar errors.

Do the errors above help find out what's wrong with LyX?
