Hello LyXers,
under
http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117&release_id=11309
you can find the new version 2.7 of LyXWinInstaller that comes with LyX
1.4.3.
More about the installer can be found here:
http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinInstaller
I used the time between the official release and now to fix some
problems of the LyX Windows build together with Joost Verburg, the
developer of the official installer. The installer uses the LyX build
from the official installer version 1.4.3-4.
LyXWinInstaller shouldn't be in competition to the offical installer it
is intended to fully configure MiKTeX and the other third-party programs
needed by Lyx and to build in some useful features that might not go
into the official installer.
LyXWinInstaller offers you:
- Automatic installation of missing LaTeX-packages when you have an open
internet connection. All packages needed by LyX are automatically
downloaded when LyX is started/configured the first time. If you later
use LaTeX-packages in your documents that aren't already installed
they will automatically be installed when you view/export your
LyX-file.
- A more comfortable method to view/update PDF-files. With this you
don't need to close Acrobat/Adobe Reader when you want to update your
document as PDF. To use this feature properly the toolbar has an
additional PDF-button to view/update PDF.
- Whitespace around PDF-images is automatically cropped also when you
view them within LyX. This is useful because most PDF-images are
smaller than A4, but would otherwise be shown with whitespace in
A4-size.
- The installer checks for programs to view/edit LaTeX-files. If you
need to have a look at the LaTeX-code LyX creates, for example to find
LaTeX-errors, all you have to do is to write the name of your editor
into the fields for the fileformat "LaTeX" in LyX's preferences. After
a restart of LyX you'll have a new entry for LaTeX in LyX's view menu.
- Imagemagick, the program used by LyX for all sorts of images, and
Ghostscript which is needed to handle PDF and Postsctipt are bundled
together with the installer. This assures that you'are using the
latest stable version especially of Imagemagick which is released very
often (and often with bugs).
- The installer has bundled the latest version of the german LyX math
manual. It can be found in LyX's install folder
~\Resources\doc\de_LyXMathebefehle.lyx
- The installer automatically installs Aspell dictionaries for english,
and the language set in your Windows, and for LyX's menu language that
you have chosen in the installer. You are prompted to install more
dictionaries if you like.
- The installer asks you to update MiKTeX also if you just have it
installed together with LyX. This assures that you have the latest
version and can benefit from the latest LaTeX-package updates and
bugfixes. The reason that updating MiKTeX should also be done for new
installations is that the MiKTeX-bundle, that is included in
the installer, is only provided one time per one or two months while
bugfixes/updates of LaTeX-packages are normally released every week.
- The uninstaller allows you to uninstall MiKTeX and Aspell together
with LyX.
