Regardles when (or if) the devs decided to implement it in lxc (even support in lxd seems not completed yet: [ https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/3326 | https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/3326 ] ), you could always perform storage-level backup yourself.
