Ah, I didn't know lapis meant anything in Portuguese. I chose it from lapis
lazuli, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapis_lazuli

"Lapis is the Latin word for 'stone'", maybe that's where the Portuguese
word for pencil is derived from.
