Actually, at any point there is no more than one or two connections opened 
simultaneously. 

What I did was to start ffplay, close ffplay, start ffplay, close ffplay, etc.

Problems like this are often caused by OS-imposed limits on the number of open 
sockets that can be used by an application; see
