With some help of the camera's technical people I was able to switch on the 
ONVIF metadata stream :-)

I added a parameter to openRTSP such that only the metadata is saved
(for those who want to dig in the source and do the same: set 'singleMedium' to 
"application")

   Thanks, that's useful: indeed only seeing video/H264 packets arrive.

   Do you know of a public test camera that produces a metadata stream so I can 
confirm it does work for a different setup?
