The OpenEmbedded related distributions are used by many developers and companies developing for embedded devices. They are not distributed as a set of binaries or source archives, but as a set of metadata describing where to fetch the sources, and how to build, install, and package them. So someone who like/need to build a distribution needs to be able to download the specified versions over a longer time. > It's important to understand that this software - unlike some others - does > not have separate 'stable' and 'experimental' releases. But i think there's no need to hide older versions to others (i do not know any other project following such a strategy). On the contrary. In my opinion making older versions available helps others to identify problems and suggest solutions for it. BTW: It would be OK for us, if the project history would be available in a public code repository (e.g. svn or git).
