Just about any distro will do.  I use Mandriva with proftpd for mine, and I 
also support ssh tunneling.  The real issue is traffic, and the *real* real 
issue is what kind of ISP service you have.  The real bottleneck will likely 
not be your box if you are serving from home. FTP is not cpu-intensive, and I 
just use an old laptop I own that has a broken screen.  It's fast enough to 
serve at DSL speeds.
