Intel Turns Over Its Linux Operating System (NY Times)

The New York Times reports that Intel will be handing control of the Moblin distribution (recently reviewed by LWN) to the Linux Foundation. "Intel will maintain strong control over the software since it employs the top Moblin developers. But that could change over time as outside developers show interest in the software."

I can't find anything funny about this.

Well its sorta funny that the Linux Foundation members are now competeing in the distro space with the Linux Foundation.

This is not a joke...<eom>

This is truth.

I hope there's better coverage than this out there somewhere. ("In this case, stewardship means access to the code of Moblin, which is an open-source operating system based on Linux."? C'mon.) Reading between the lines, it sounds like Intel wants to move Moblin towards being a community-owned distro and one of the steps is to get it out of intel.com (compare RedHat vs. Fedora Foundation, etc.), but that's just a guess...

It is probably designed to encourage more people to contribute to Moblin. They actually doing some neat stuff, but I suppose it had the appearance of being some internal Intel-only thing for Intel-only machines.

From what I can see, someone may correct me, they are using Ubuntu and
Fedora repositories for the bulk of their stuff, with some customization
for the desktop, kernel and startup routines. To put together a Moblin
image, you point to the repositories that you want to use. And I think,
not sure here, that the intel only stuff comes from the ubuntu and fedora
repositories. Not the main ones of course, but both projects have
repositories for specific platforms or by particular developers.

Small correction...
There is no Fedora Foundation which exists as a separate entity from Red Hat that manages the Fedora Project activities.
