You get my standard explanation!  No, I can't tell you want the best
distro would be for you, because I don't know you, nor do I know your
preferences and needs.  The crazy thing about Linux is the array of
choices you have.  You got a lot of responses to this post already with
people telling you what choices they made, but that doesn't really
answer your question.  Hit up www.distrowatch.com and take a look at
some of the more popular distros.  Burn some live CDs to get a feel for
them.  That will be the best way for you to know what the best distro is
for you.

Regarding your printer, I'd suggest looking at the printer database at
this site:  http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting
