You get my standard explanation! No, I can't tell you want the best distro would be for you, because I don't know you, nor do I know your preferences and needs. The crazy thing about Linux is the array of choices you have. You got a lot of responses to this post already with people telling you what choices they made, but that doesn't really answer your question. Hit up www.distrowatch.com and take a look at some of the more popular distros. Burn some live CDs to get a feel for them. That will be the best way for you to know what the best distro is for you.
