Hi Puji, 
              you may find source code for kernel on your installation 
disk..and if you have done full installation then you may find it on your hard 
drive.. at location /usr/src .. and if you want to download the source code for 
kernel from net then you can go to www.kernel.org 
        
           you can refer to the how to document on www.tldp.org before 
compiling kernel. and YES you can edit the configuration file with any text 
editor you don't need anything speical for that.
