After a lot of (unnecessary, in my case) trail and error with setting voltages, I would like to offer another possible culprit of instabilities: Make sure your power supply is sufficiently powerful. I grabbed one that looked good an fit well, was able to power up, too - but as soon as I did anything (some network traffic, or something else), it crashed ... when, finally, I noticed it said 600mA!
