When I removed the failed drive which thought it was the good one!!! The remaining drive and it's partition came back on line just fine. There may be a problem in the sequence of partitions that has been uncovered here. With my failure, the failed drive was marked as the good one when I tried to hot add it back into the array and the good drive was marked as the one bad etc.... All turned out ok when I simply shut the thing off and removed the dead one. The failure involved seeking to particular areas on the disk that left the boot track intact but most of the rest of the drive very dead.
