To be honest, this patch is hard to follow. Not your fault, it simply is 
difficult
code. I think that I will merge a v3 (with all the comments fixed) and then see 
if
I can refactor things to make the code easier to understand.

And while I do that, you can start work on the stateless codec, which is after 
all
the goal of your project :-)
