devm_gpiod_get_optional may return an error pointer, e.g. for
-EPROBE_DEFER, so you should add:

    rval = PTR_ERR(sensor->xshutdown);
    dev_err(&client->dev, "Could not get gpio (%ld)\n", rval);
    return rval;
}
