I ended up purchasing a Samsung SyncMaster 713N yesterday for 15.2K.
It gives me 1280x1024, has a fairly high refresh rate (or whatever
those things are termed in TFT parlance -- 8ms or something), and
works like a charm once I bring my X resolution down.
Since I don't do multimedia or play games (except the occasional
Lt. Skat), fast-moving images aren't that much of a problem. After
bringing down font sizes in Konsole, Firefox and Xemacs I find I have
more or less as much screen real estate available to me as before, and
still have a screen more readable than earlier.
BTW, anyone want to buy a 5-year old LG 17" CRT in decent working
condition?
