Review: Still numero Uno

If only I had the vocabulary to explain how this game struck my 13yr old self
when I first saw it not long after we purchased our first PC in early 1995 - a
486DX2 80MHz, 8MB RAM. At that time I was experienced in 8-bit games, mostly
simple 2D action and platformers I used to play on by then obsolete 48K ZX
Spectrum we used to have since roughly '87. The blow was softened somewhat by
two weeks of Lion King and Goblins 3 (and Dune which I didn't understand Jack
sheit) before dad brought Doom. But when it appeared on screen - God damn did
it look good. Sound Blaster 16 hadn't arrived yet so it was the PC Speaker ...
but it didn't matter. The graphic, the fluidity of motion, the vividness of
action, enemies, guns,... and when the SB16 came... no words. And of course all
that loaded nearly instantly compared to waiting 5-10 minutes for the cassette
to load 48 kilobytes into Speccy's RAM. The transition was drastic to say the
least.

For the next 5 years I became an uber-master with keyboard controlled FPS of
the time: Quake, Duke 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, etc. With circumstantial
switch to mouse for Quake in one Game EXPO I visited in '98. Wiped the floor
even tho I had never touched a mouse with a FPS back then. Still it felt weird
so I returned to KB and washed away my sins. Eventually I saw the light during
one multiplayer baptizing process in after highschool LAN where I tried to own
AVP with KB, lol. It was a funny episode let me tell you (wasn't last tho). But
I'll leave that for another occasion.

All I can say is that after 25 years not one FPS has nailed or surpassed the
way Doom plays out as a pure straight shooter. Not one FPS. Doom does enemies,
gunplay, movement, maps, atmosphere, visuals, SFX and music like no other.

Review:

Overload of amazing! This is the game that my parents didn't want me to play as
a child, I am not a child anymore! Love it! Got it and love it just like my 5
yr old self did hiding at a friends house!

Cheers,
Stephen
