OK, thanks. I was able to install the newer version on Ubuntu using 
instructions found here 
<http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/general/libuv.html> - 
unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem I am having, but it did 
eliminate the version question.
