Manually fiddling is only necessary when you already did fiddle :-) i.e. it should choose 4.0 compiler itself when not explicitly told otherwise (i.e. no environmentvariables set already) If version is greater, then it checks for 4.0 and tries to uses that http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/bootstrap/tree/configure.in#n1902 So you apparently did set some paths or links, so that gcc-4.0 is not at the same place at the detected compiler.
