I have had the same behavior sometimes with a database. But I haven't ever set
Tools -> Options -> Load/Save -> general -> always create backup copy is
enabled.

I have now tried to set it, but there isn't any copy saved of a *.odb-file.
This is the default of Base: No backup will be written.

I don't know which process writes this kind of "backups" you got there. I can't
reproduce it with any database, so it is difficult to find the reason for this
"numbered" database files.
