The patch in that bug report is a good code pointer for finding out why this happens. I personally have no intention of removing this 'feature' of being able to easily drag and drop an entire hyperlink. To modify/edit a hyperlink then, simply place the cursor in the hyperlink and then use the keyboard to delete the unwanted characters (since in-the-middle selections aren't supposed to be possible). Note that for Linux/GTK we often ARE able to select inside of a hyperlink. The likely explanation is in bug 116384 comment 10.
