Or maybe roll into handling of the forced restart bug 166870 ? My thoughts are that enforcing the restart with *any* change between Auto - Light - Dark, or any of the theme extensions remains the most reliable behavior, and user should be prompted to do so. It just seems like the auto toggle between Light - Dark (without an os/DE color scheme change) is always going to leave areas of the UI unrefreshed and so is not the best UX cross platform and DEs. Seems like bug 166870 should be adjusted to explicitly enforce a restart with any theme selection change.
