Bug ID: 168411
Summary: Improve cursor behavior when clearing text selection
(match MS Word behavior)
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
When working with longer texts in LibreOffice Writer, I frequently notice a
difference in cursor behavior compared to MS Word that negatively affects my
workflow: If I select a large block of text across multiple pages and then
press the left arrow key, the selection is cleared, but the cursor remains at
its current position – i.e., where I last was. In MS Word, however, the cursor
automatically jumps to the beginning of the previously selected area when the
selection is cleared. This behavior feels much more intuitive and productive to
me.
I would love to see LibreOffice Writer offer an option to adopt this behavior –
ideally as a configurable setting under user preferences (e.g., “Move cursor to
start of selection when clearing”). Alternatively, adopting the MS Word
behavior as the default could also be considered.
Why is this important?
Increases consistency and predictability of cursor movement
Improves usability when working with large text blocks
Reduces frustration and the need to re-adapt for users switching from MS Word
Could help improve user acceptance of LibreOffice Writer
Personally, I regularly switch back to MS Word because this behavior in Writer
frustrates me every time. It would be fantastic if this could be improved.
Thanks for considering this and for the great work on the project!
