Sure, there are always ways to do it with existing means. 
But don't you see that, once implemented, what I suggest would make the task so
much simpler? 
Much less to understand, memorize and type. 

Moreover, it will easily allow even more complex tasks, for example flattening
a big rectangular range in a single column or row - once Calc implements a bit
more powerful pattern continuation rules, as I explain here:

You'll just need to enter the formulas to grab the first 2 rows of that range
(and even for that, the proposed enhancement will help) , then just drag and
Calc will know how to do it!
