I mostly only use xfce on my laptop, but before upgrading that I
want to feel that the new build will be worthwhile. The laptop is a
zen1+ so I mostly test full xfce on a desktop zen1+ with 8 CPUs
(technically, 4 + multi threading) which is similar to what is on
the laptop, except faster and with more RAM.

I happened to be watching 'top' while building nss-3.62 with -j4 and
noticed that Xorg was using around 115% CPU. Later I thought that
maybe this was overhead from xfce4-terminal which I was running with
 2>&1 | tee mylog
(I know xfce4-terminal is slow when starting, typing lags for a few
seconds, and I assumed that the scrolling display might be
involved.)

But I've just started xfce on my 4-core (no SMT) zen1 and again it
is using around 115% CPU.

Colour me "disappointed".
